The eight basic emotions use Plutchik's model, which includes two positive emotions: joy and trust, two ambivalent ones: surprise and expectation, and rather negative ones: sadness, fear, disgust and anger. Tiredness has been added.

Joy concerns all positive reactions, it’s associated with smiling, with the feeling that we like something.

Sadness means loss, a feeling of loneliness. This’s an emotion opposite to the one described above, together with joy they create a contrasting pair in Plutchik's circle.

Trust is expressing a sense of security, expecting that something will happen in the way we expect.

Disgust is an expression of disgust, very strong criticism and reluctance. It’s a strong emotion associated with the reaction of rejection and avoidance of something.

Anger – another strong feeling, very negative. Instead of avoidance, it involves attack and leads to aggression. In this way we express threats, but also dissatisfaction.

Fear accompanies danger, threat and risk. It’s associated with escape, the desire to hide. It’s also a cry for help.

Surprise occurs when our predictions don’t come true or something unexpected happens to us. When combined with joy, it brings delight, and when combined with sadness, it brings disappointment. It can vary in intensity, from mild surprise to panic (also associated with fear).

Expectation – the last emotion we examined. The opposite of surprise, because it means making predictions and believing that they will come true. It may therefore be associated with anxiety or excitement, and therefore also ambivalent.

Tiredness isn’t an emotion, but a mental state, however important in the context of the baby's recognition of signals and feelings coming from its body.
